Three Popular Health Fads That Are Halting Your Fitness Progress

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

People generally are looking for the next great little tip to help improve their health or lose weight. While most of them seem good, they actually could be halting your fitness progress!

But it’s good fat!

I don’t know how many times I have heard my dad say this but just because it’s good fat doesn’t mean you have the green light to shove almonds down your throat like its nobody’s business! Having too much good fat could still cause you to gain weight because of the amount of calories in fat. In case you do not know, there are 9 calories in 1 gram of fat (regardless of good or bad fat), 4 calories in 1 gram of each of carbohydrates and protein, and 7 calories per 1 gram of alcohol. Always remember, in order to lose weight you must burn more calories than you consume!

“Sugar-Free”

With the increasing awareness of sugar intake and it’s relation to Type 2 Diabetes, most people look for the “Sugar-Free” version of their favorite snack. Less sugar is generally better, except when it comes to what is used in place of sugar. Most companies use compounds that are nowhere near natural that can end up causing effects worse than sugar. These compounds are harder for the body to digest (and in a lot of cases are not digested) and can cause you to continue to put on weight. Also, if you have to look for a snack that has a “Sugar-Free” alternative you probably shouldn’t be eating it anyways! It is more than likely processed which is bad with or without sugar!

Gluten-free

I have never understood the craze about going Gluten-free if you do not have Coeliac’s disease or are sensitive to gluten. There is not much solid research to prove that it is better for you or will help you lose weight. On the contrary, I have seen more research that says Gluten-free products are missing important vitamins, minerals and fiber that are found in gluten-containing foods. Foods that are processed as gluten-free may also contain higher amounts of salt, sugar, and fats as well as a higher glycemic index.

Remember, don’t believe everything the News tells you is the next greatest “weight loss miracle diet” because it’s probably not! Always do your research and find out for yourself! The sooner you accept that there’s no easy way out, the sooner you will achieve your fitness goals!
